S Jaishankar: India’s military is bolstered at the tense China border
According to India’s foreign minister, the nation has unprecedentedly increased troop deployment near a contentious border with China.
S. Jaishankar said that India would not allow China to “unilaterally modify” the current border quo.
His remarks come days after Indian and Chinese forces combatted a contentious border region in Arunachal Pradesh.
Chinese troops’ “encroachment,” according to India, is what spark the conflict.
The border situation was, to their knowledge, “usually steady,” and the two sides were still communicating about it, according to the foreign ministry of China.
China and India are connect by a dispute 3,440km (2,100 miles) long de facto border known as the Line of Actual Control, or LAC. Both sides’ soldiers frequently contact one another, and tensions can sometimes become skirmishes or clashes.
Since a bloody altercation in June 2020 in the Galway Valley of the Ladakh area, far farther to the west, in which 20 Indian soldiers and at least four Chinese soldiers perished, both sides have attempted to deescalate the situation.
On December 9, the most recent flare-up was the first in more than a year, which left a few soldiers with minor wounds. Both parties allegedly immediately departed the area, according to the Indian Army.
At an event hosted by the news source India Today on Monday, Mr. Jaishankar addressed and responded to queries about the incident.
“The Indian Army is currently station close to China’s border, in contrast to us. The Indian Army is currently deploy to oppose any attempts to unilaterally change LAC “said he.
China still needs to respond to the remarks.
Last week, the most recent encounter cause a political commotion in India, with opposition parties leaving the legislature after their demand for an immediate debate on the border situation was turned down.
The leader of India’s largest opposition party, the Congress, Rahul Gandhi, has accused the government of failing to recognize China’s threat and assert that Chinese forces are “thrashing” Indian soldiers along the border.
