Grandfather was killed in Haturipeta for protesting the beating of his grandson

In Rajshahi’s Bagmara Upazila, a complaint has been received that a grandfather was beaten to death with a hammer for protesting the beating of his grandson. The incident took place in front of people at Jaipur junction of the upazila at around nine o’clock on Sunday night.

The dead farmer’s name is Gayer Uddin (60). He is a resident of Jaipur village of Nardash Union of Upazila.

Citing local people, the police said that after yesterday evening, a local 16-year-old teenager had an argument with Mustafizur Rahman, the grandson of Gayer Uddin. At one stage, the teenager found Mostafizur alone at Jaipur intersection and beat him with a hammer. Mostafizur was rescued and sent to the local health complex.

After learning about the matter at night, grandfather Gayer Uddin went to protest. The teenager got into an argument with Gayer Uddin at Jaipur intersection. At one point, the teenager got angry and hammered Gayer Uddin in front of the people. He fell on the ground. Even though there were people around, no one came forward for fear of being hammered by the teenager. Later Gayer Uddin died. On receiving the information, Bagmara police station and police of local Hat Gangopara investigation center recovered the body from the spot. Later, the body was sent to the morgue for post-mortem.

Local people claim that the teenager is a scoundrel and a member of a gang. There are allegations against him of sexually harassing girls and beating people for no reason.

Local union council member Kazem Uddin told Prothom Alo that there is no crime that the teenager does not commit. No one protests out of fear. They want exemplary punishment for that teenager.

Bagmara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Arvind Sarkar told Prothom Alo that a case was filed with the police station on Monday morning on behalf of the family of the deceased. The police are trying to arrest the main accused in the case, Kishore.
