In the film Leave The World Behind, Julia Roberts confronts the apocalypse

The first trailer for Netflix’s Leave the World Behind features Julia Roberts battling a mysterious catastrophe. The seldom-seen Roberts returned to the big screen alongside George Clooney in 2022’s Ticket to Paradise, which evolved into a sleeper hit with $172 million taken at the worldwide box office.

Roberts will appear in the post-apocalyptic Netflix film Leave the World Behind in 2023 alongside Mahershala Ali and Ethan Hawke.

The 2023 release schedule looks interesting for Netflix as the streaming service continues to crank out material of both the movie and series variety.

That release new schedule was just announce in a new video compilation showcasing first-look footage from various Netflix titles, including Leave the World Behind.  You can see a small preview of the upcoming Roberts-led apocalyptic drama (around the 1:57 mark).

Leave The World Behind Everything We Know

Leave the World Behind was supposed to reconnect Roberts with her Pelican Brief co-star Denzel Washington, but Washington was forced to withdraw and was replaced by Ali.

In addition to Roberts, Ali, and Hawke, the film stars Myha’la Herrold from Bodies Bodies Bodies, as well as Kevin Bacon, Charlie Evans (Everything’s Going To Be Okay), and Farrah MacKenzie (Logan Lucky).

The following is the synopsis for Leave the World Behind:

After releasing the Oscar-nominated catastrophe picture Don’t Look Up in 2021, Netflix is no stranger to producing huge, star-studded movies with apocalyptic themes.

That film was written and direct by Adam McKay, who is notorious for giving everything a satirical shine. However, Leave the World Behind is the brainchild of Sam Esmail, the creator of the critically acclaimed dark thriller series Mr Robot.

It appears to have a much darker and more realistic tone than the comical Don’t Look Up. Esmail not only directed but also wrote the script for Leave the World Behind, based on Rumaan Alam’s novel.

Given Esmail’s previous best-known work, Mr Robot, which revolve around a psychologically unstable hacker attempting to bring down the system, it’s no surprise that Leaves the World Behind likewise dealt with a technological catastrophe, this time a huge blackout.

It remains to be seen whether the film will be a major awards contender for Netflix, but the fact that it is being release so late in the year suggests that the studio expects it to receive some recognition.

When Leave the World Behind arrives on Netflix on December 8, 2023, audiences can expect a suspenseful and riveting thriller with a strong psychological core and excellent performances from an award-worthy cast.
