Why Star Says Robbie Reyes’ Ghost Rider Should Return to the MCU
Diego Luna has shared his thoughts on why Robbie Reyes’ Ghost Rider should return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe more than five years after his final outing. In season four of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Luna assumed the role of the Ghost Rider for the first time. Then revealed that he had escaped a gang assault owing to Johnny Blaze, who had come to him in Rider form and offered to give him the Spirit of Vengeance. Reyes helped S.H.I.E.L.D. fight A.I.D.A. and eventually transported the Darkhold to another reality to hide while exacting retribution on the street gang that killed his brother.
Diego Luna discussed his opinions on perhaps returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider during an interview with ComicBook.com to talk about HBO’s The Last of Us. He expressed interest in rejoining the group and believed it was crucial to resurrect his Spirit of Vengeance persona because “there’s a lot more to say” and “show people a Mexican-American hero.” Watch what Luna said afterward:
Where In The MCU, Ghost Rider Might Appear
Interestingly, a solo Ghost Rider series focusing on Luna’s character is a plan for Hulu with a 2020 premiere date. It was after his cameo on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. As a result of a “creative disagreement” with the show’s direction, the streamer ultimately decided to discontinue the program in late 2019. This decision coincided with Marvel Studios’ decision to cut relations with its outside networks to generate content for the soon-to-be-launched Disney+ service. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Punisher were all canceled at roughly the same time as other Marvel-related Netflix series.
Even though Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. may have ended, Reyes’ Ghost Rider could make an appearance in future MCU films. The demonic book recently appeared in WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which has some MCU fans wondering how Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness came into possession before Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch. His final appearance saw him run off with the Darkhold to hide it. Given Agatha’s demonstrated strength in eliminating her coven and coming dangerously close to eliminating Wanda, it would be intriguing to hear whether she defeated Reyes’ Ghost Rider to obtain the book or whether her magic sensitivity allowed her to locate his secret hiding location in the Darkhold.
The explanation of how Hahn obtained the Darkhold may to revealed in the upcoming WandaVision spinoff Agatha: Coven of Chaos, which ostensibly hints at an investigation of Hahn’s past and future in the MCU. It would then resolve Reyes’ Ghost Rider comeback. The two characters might engage in combat in the series, with Reyes identifying her as the last person to possess the book. In addition, the MCU appears to be assembling its version of the Midnight Sons with the likes of Gael Garcia Bernal’s Werewolf by Night, Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight, Laura Donnelly’s Elsa Bloodstone, and Mahershala Ali’s Blade, leaving plenty of room for Diego Luna’s Ghost Rider to carry on with his brand of justice.
