Tips on Boost Your Computer Performance
Probably everyone has had the laptop hang at the most inopportune moment. Other people recall how the computer slowed down so much that it was virtually impossible to work. Fortunately, there are ways to do this that don’t involve direct replacement of all equipment. In this article, we introduce methods to speed up your computer. They will certainly facilitate the daily use of these devices, save a lot of nerves and unnecessary expenses.
1. Defragmenting computer
One of the easiest ways to speed up your computer is disk defragmentation, a Windows feature – and that’s where you should start. Depending on the size and degree of disk use, the entire process may take from minutes to even hours. Defragmentation is simply organizing an information medium – arranging data on it so that it is more easily accessible to the user and programs. It is recommended that you defragment your computer at least once every two months to optimize your computer.
2. Cleaning registry
The Windows registry is like your PC’s logbook. During many years of use, the system fills up with hundreds of entries – a large part of them are remnants of programs that have long been missing on the disk. Tidy up the registry translates into speeding up your computer – so install a good cleaner and enjoy a more efficient work. An example of such an application is CCleaner, which will deal with a run-down registry and remove unnecessary temporary files.
3. Speeding up your computer right from the start
Optimizing your computer also reduces system loading times. In Windows go to the Start menu and in the “Search files and programs” window enter the command “msconfig”. Then click on the Startup tab – here is a list of all the applications that launch with the system. Deselect those that you think are unnecessary – by the way, you can catch malicious adware and spyware (see point 9) that slow down Windows boot.
4. Replacing hardware
You may find that cleaning your computer is not enough. The web browser begins to eat up more and more resources, and despite optimization, Windows continues to load slowly. How to speed up the computer in this case? The best solution is to buy additional RAM and SSD disk. A larger cache will have the benefit of a smoother PC. It is worth remembering that motherboards have limitations in the amount of RAM installed – before buying a bone, check its technical specification. The type of operating system can also be an obstacle – outdated 32-bit software will not handle more than 3 gigabytes of memory.
Computer optimization in terms of hardware should not be complete without a modern SSD drive. It is a data medium created on the basis of the same technology that is found in popular flash drives. Purchasing an SSD will significantly speed up the computer in the form of a short system boot and faster program loading. The downside of this solution is the price – SSDs in reasonable capacities (above 256 GB) are still a very expensive matter.
5. Changing the operating system
In many cases, the best computer optimization is to change the operating system. Particular attention should be paid to numerous Linux distributions – many of them will be perfect for inefficient desktops or netbooks. Examples: Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Crunchbag, Linux Lite, Manjaro, Zorin, AntiX. The choice is wide! Another news is that such a computer speedup is completely free, since Linux distributions are free software.
6. Cleaning the fan
Often times, the main cause of the drop in performance is simply that the computer is overheating. Usually, they are caused by obstruction of the vents and the fan.
It is worth unscrewing the casing once in a while, get to the fan and clean it. Compressed air will work well here, with which you “blow” dust from components. Sometimes it is also necessary to replace the thermal grease on the processor or graphics card. You can take care of it yourself or have the computer serviced.
7. Antivirus programs
You may find that the culprit of all the fuss is an anti-virus application that gobbles up huge amounts of system resources. How to speed up a computer with an active antivirus? Just replace the antivirus program with one that will be gentler on your barely dripping old man. Search the network for tests describing the resource consumption of individual software from reputable manufacturers. Choose one that runs in the background without taking up many megabytes of RAM and using very little CPU.
8. Getting rid of adware
Common culprits for slowing down hardware are adware and spyware, which are malicious adware sand tracking software. Such applications often run in the background, taking away valuable computing power and thus making life difficult for the user. Many of them start together with the system, delaying its start by several dozen seconds or even a few minutes. In this situation, it is necessary to thoroughly clean your computer of uninvited guests – detailed instructions on how to get rid of adware and spyware can be found in our guide.
9. Uninstallingunnecessary applications
Does uninstalling programs make computer faster? It’s reported that a PC with a large number of programs installed is much slower than an “empty” computer. As in any case, the best solution is prevention, i.e. economical management of disk space. It’s too late? Well, you are left with a thorough cleaning up of your hard drive. This is where the program for cleaning the computer from remnants of already removed applications will come in handy.
Here, however, we recommend that you be very careful, because in the Programs and Features tab you will also find those that you will not associate at all – because they are not installed by you. Yes, they can be viruses and PUPs (Potentially Unwanted programs), but also driver packages and applications that enable the operation of a computer. They are usually clearly labeled with the manufacturer’s name of the device, but if you are unsure, check the internet first for what it is or contact an authorized service center.
Here are all the methods you should know if you want to speed up your computer. Which of them do you use? Or maybe you also have an equally effective proposal? We are waiting for your comment.
