In terms of box office revenue, Avatar 2 surpasses Jurassic World and The Lion King
The box office Top 10 all-time list now has Avatar: The Way of Water at No. 7. Avatar, which debuted in 2009 and with a worldwide gross of $2.922 billion, remains the highest-grossing movie of all time 13 years after its release. Returning director James Cameron previously stated that the big-budget movie needed to make around $2 billion just to meet the break-even point. However, the film has already been confirmed to be profitable, implying that there will be many more sequels (his 1997 film Titanic is also in the Top 10 at No. 3, creating him the director with the most entries on the list).
According to Deadline, Avatar: The Way of Water‘s record-breaking box office success is still making headlines across the globe. The movie is anticipated to have generated $1.708 billion by the conclusion of this weekend, which will be it’s fourth at the box office since its premiere on December 16, 2022. As a result, it has surpassed 2015’s Jurassic World ($1.671 billion), and 2019’s The Lion King ($1.663 billion) is the seventh-highest-grossing film of all time according to worldwide box office results.
Will Avatar: The Way of Water surpasses all other movies in terms of box office revenue?
Avatar: The Way of Water has a bright future, but there is still a long way to go before it can continue to climb the all-time charts. Titanic ($1.916 billion), Avengers: Infinity War ($2.048 billion), Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens ($2.069 billion), and Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.916 billion) are the following four standards. Given its pace, the Avatar 2 sequel should have no trouble surpassing those books and ranking No. 3.
Between those movies and the overall Top 2, which are 2019’s Avengers: Endgame ($2.797 billion) and, of course, the first Avatar, there is a sizable gap. The movie needs to earn an additional $1 billion and then some to take the No. 1 spot in history. Given that the movie is one of the few from the pandemic era to play in China, this might give it a significant boost. Still, the pre-pandemic films Endgame and Avatar also debuted in China without the hassle of probable theatre closures, providing them an advantage.
Avatar: The Way of Water was recently brought down a notch. The Avatar sequel fell to No. 2 for the first time since its premiere on Friday, but it will still hold the top spot at the domestic box office this weekend thanks to the upstart Blumhouse horror film M3GAN. Before Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania opens on February 17, other upcoming movies, including House Party, Knock at the Cabin, and Magic Mike’s Last Dance can accomplish a similar feat by gradually chipping away at the movie’s box office dominance over the following month.
