Klay Thompson’s life story, facts, and biography

American basketball player Klay Alexander Thompson is a shooting guard for the National Basketball Association’s Golden State Warriors. 

Additionally, Thompson has competed for the United States in international basketball tournaments. As one of the NBA’s most prolific shooters and a multiple-time champion, Thompson has amassed a strong professional résumé.

A career in High School

Klay Thompson attended Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita for his senior year of high school after spending most of his life in Oregon. Thompson set the record for the most threes made in a state championship game during his senior year as he guided his team to the Division III state championships. Thompson was almost universally regarded as a four-star recruit, which enabled him to join Washington State in the Pac-10.

Career in College

Klay Thompson chose Washington State University, where he played collegiate basketball for Tony Bennett, who has since guided Virginia to a national championship. In his first season at Washington State, Thompson was able to contribute straight immediately, starting all 33 of the team’s contests. As a result, he was named to the Pac-10 all-freshman team.

Thompson was named to the all-Pac-10 first team in his sophomore and junior years. In his final two seasons with the Cougars, he averaged 19.6 and 21.6 points per game. Thompson set the Washington State single-season mark for most points by a player in a season during his junior year. He is one of just two men’s basketball players to have his number retired at Washington State, even though he decided to enter the NBA Draft after his junior season.

NBA Career

The Golden State Warriors selected Thompson as the 11th choice in the 2011 NBA Draft. The Warriors gave the shooting duo Stephen Curry and another NBA player with prodigious shooting skills the “Splash Brothers.” The two hit it off immediately away, which helped the Warriors improve tremendously. Thompson received All-NBA rookie first-team accolades in his rookie season, which was capped by a 27-point outburst against the New Orleans Hornets. Thompson made more than 40% of his three-point attempts during that season.

The Splash Brothers were able to step things up once the Warriors hired Steve Kerr as their new head coach. With this group under Kerr, the team captured its first NBA title in 2015 when Thompson, Curry, and Draymond Green combined to defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals. The Warriors won the NBA Finals in 2017 and 2018 after acquiring Kevin Durant, and Thompson’s unflappable shooting helped the team overcome any disadvantage. In each of the three NBA championship seasons, Thompson was name to the third team of All-NBA.

The things that Thompson has accomplished go far beyond what he and the Warriors have accomplished in the postseason. He has been selecte for five NBA All-Star Games and averaged over 12 points per game. Additionally, Thompson has competed for the US national team numerous times, taking home gold at the FIBA World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.

Klay Thompson was born in Los Angeles and is the son of Mychal and Julie Thompson. During his playing career, Thompson’s father played for the Los Angeles Lakers. Mychel Thompson and Trayce Thompson are his two brothers. His family lived near Lake Oswego, Oregon, just 10 miles from Portland, from when he was born until he went back to California for high school.

Although Thompson is currently childless, he had a prominent relationship with Laura Harrier during his playing career.
